Psychic!!

[ To say Jean is overwhelmed is an understatement.

But this isn't the first time she's been flooded with memories. By the time she's processed, she trusts herself enough not to keep her mind locked up tight. On the way to the Up, she reaches out - just to one person, so far, because he must be wondering if she's really here. ]

Nate?

( it's moments like these, he's thankful it was his telekinesis he lost and not his telepathy. his telepathy is too much like a sixth sense to him — a part of him in ways others can't really understand.

that being said, were he not asleep, he would have felt her the moment she found herself here again. instead, he hears her voice within the depths of his slumber and, initially, he thinks himself to be dreaming — it wouldn't be the first time he's dreamt of someone he's missed that he cares about.

but his mind, powerful as it is, catches up to what's happening and it wakes him, groggy a little as he turns in his bed, squinting up to the ceiling before he lets that mind of his wander... drift... and that's when he sits up. that's when he feels her. )

Jean? ( and then.. ) ...Mom?

[ There's no one to see the way her eyes well up, which is a relief in a place like this. ]

Son.

[ One word can say so much even when it's spoken, but psychically?

There's a vast depth of love and pride and resounding, desperate relief.

Chased, naturally, by ragged frustration. ]

I'm so sorry, I never would have left you on purpose.

( for a long moment, he doesn't say anything but he doesn't need to. she must know that he's feeling her out with his mind — making sure it's really her and not some trick or hallucination that he might be experiencing; one can never be too sure in a place like this after all.

when he feels her — feels that it's her, he looks down, breath there caught in the back of his throat and his eyes fall shut then. even if she can't see it, she must be able to feel it... the frown that touches his lips, coupled with the heavy weight of loss there in his chest. )

I woke up and you were gone...

[ She doesn't begrudge him in the slightest, opening her mind further so that he can be certain. Not entirely - she keeps her last moments at home locked down tight - but she doesn't suppress the sense of shock and helplessness or the gnawing anxiety. ]

I wanted to be there for you when you remembered - more of what happened.

[ There's a question there - what did he remember - but she doesn't ask explicitly, not yet. ]

( he knows what she's asking... she doesn't need to be so direct in it. chalk it up to telepath things? to the sort of mother-son connection they have with one another? either way, he lets her see, rather than explain. he lets her see the way sinister has him strung up and claims that he's his, how onslaught tricks and captures him and keeps him chained as he threatens to take his power for himself. he lets her see a young franklin richards and nate saving him, spider-man and morbius and how his more empathic traits can sometimes turn him into a vampire. but it's the fight with madelyne that he really highlights — with her there at his side and the way he seems utterly crushed to find out what he had done... who jean was to him... and how heartbroken he was to have been the cause of it all... how he wished she had been his mother. )

( because he had felt like he had lost her when they parted ways there after madelyne... then woke to find her gone from here. )

[ She braces herself, and her rage at least isn't destructive when she sees firsthand what Sinister put him through, but there's definitely a downright vicious chord struck deep within her.

One she shares with, of course, Madelyne.

Her heart clenches in her chest as she watches, again, what she couldn't stop; what she couldn't spare either of them from. ]

I wish I hadn't walked away from you then. I wish I could have shown her -

[ The words stutter and there's a flash of someone Nate wouldn't know, an image of the sister Jean had already lost. ]

( like rachel, he doesn't recognize her, but he feels the way her heart clenches — the grief that's tangled up within. )

I lost my telekinesis... ( he says then, hands clenching at the sheets around him. ) I guess I'm burning out. Like Moira said I would. Like Sinister wanted me to.

Fuck Sinister.

[ Jean doesn't curse, generally. Sinister often makes himself an exception. ]

I've lost my telekinesis before, too. When we were all together, in the cabin? I'd lost my telepathy for a while.

Even when our bodies are stable, our powers aren't always predictable.

( he shares the sentiment about that madman. )

Maybe.

( he's just... not sure when he's not supposed to live for very long to begin with. it's fine. he's... sort of accepting it. his short lifespan, that is. )

You should reach out to Scott, if you haven't.

[ Back in the limo, her fist clenches at her side. There should be something she can do. As an X-Man, as the Phoenix, as his mother.

But there isn't. She couldn't stay with Nathan, she couldn't save Rachel, she couldn't - ]

I will, I just - wanted to check in with you before anything else.

[ Finally, she asks at least one thing that's been weighing her down. ]

How long have I been gone?

[ There's a lot of baggage in those words. ]

( cable's powers are suppressed with his holding back the virus trying to kill him, while nate lives without that virus and, as such, unlimited potential, but. at the cost of only having a few years to live. he doesn't know who has it better, really. )

A little more than a month.

( it's strange how it feels longer yet not. )

Some things happened. Don't let him try and brush it off as nothing.

[ There are a few moments of just silent, stunned relief.

Usually, she's gone for so much longer.

It's followed by a burst of bleak, wry laughter. ]

Trust me, I am very done with letting him get away with that.

( nate is unable to meet her bleak amusement with knowing what he knows [and unfortunately saw] and, instead, is just quiet for a pause in thought before he continues. )

If he won’t talk to you, talk to Logan. I’m sure he knows.

[ That alone tells her how bad it must be.

She was gone for a month - ]

Is there anything else I should know? How's Wade?

I'm not really talking to him at the moment.

( scott, he means. )

Wade's Wade. People missed you.

Should I talk to him before I ask you about that?

[ She can think of...a few reasons that might be the case, honestly. ]

( she might feel the way his mind closes up to a certain extent; doors closing in a metaphorical and telepathic sense. )

You should go check on him.

[ She does, and there's a swell of worry but no frustration; some things you need to be patient about. ]

I will. But we're coming back to this, okay? Whatever happened -

[overconfidently]

( he wants to tell her, but he can't deal with the possibility of her being disappointed in him right now. it's why he doesn't want to talk to scott either. he doesn't regret what he did and he doesn't need scott to be upset or mad at him for it when all nate was doing was trying to protect the last piece of family he had here. he doesn't expect them to understand when they've always had each other and their x-men while he's always been alone at some point. )
